Prayer is an act of communication by humans to the sacred or Holy God. Prayer is speaking to God or conversation with God. Prayer is a tremendous privilege that we can talk to God over an issue and approach His throne of grace to get answers. Hebrews 4:16 says: “Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” It is a wonderful privilege to take our petitions to God and get answers.
The purpose of prayer is communion with God. God demands that we make out time regularly to pray and interact with Him. In Genesis 3:8, God was coming down by the cool of the day to interact with Adam. God comes at the cool of the day when He knows there won’t be distraction to have interaction with Adam. This underscores the need to have personal devotion with God. When we spend time with God, we speak to Him, we listen to Him speak to us; we draw strength and our hope is renewed. God was having devotion and interaction with the man He created. Another purpose of prayer is to seek for divine intervention. There are many things warring against us and we have to seek for divine intervention. God saw the affliction of the children of Israel for 400 years, but waited for them until they cried unto Him for intervention before He intervened. When we offer serious prayer, God comes down to intervene.
There are certain things that we will never receive as children of God until we ask for it. In Matthew 7:8, the Bible says: “For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.” There are certain things you will never find until you seek for them and there are certain doors that won’t be opened until you seriously knock at the door of Heaven. You have to pray with deep passion and pray in such a way and manner that Heaven will get your attention and release those things you seek for. We must attach great importance to prayer since one of the purposes of prayer is to seek for divine intervention. Many regard prayer as the commonest and cheapest thing any Christian can do. They do not believe in the efficacy of prayers. This poor attitude towards prayers is affecting many Christians today.
Prayer is the only weapon we have in the warfare of life. Prayer can give birth to uncommon miracles in anyone’s life. Someone observed that God has limited Himself to the prayers of His people. The extent you can go depends on the quantity and quantum of prayer you make. We need to restore the spirit and habit of prayer to our churches
Prayer is power. A Prayerless believer is a limited believer. Prayer grants access into many things in Life. Even our God says that men ought always to pray and not to faint according to Luke 1. God answers prayers and the Bible is full of so many instances of answered prayers. In Genesis 25:21, Isaac prayed and the barren wife became pregnant and gave birth to twins. Hezekiah prayed and God changed his date of death to 15 years upwards. Prayer can change things. Through prayers, you will choose what to allow to happen and what not to allow to happen.
