As part of its objectives to strengthen and deepen relationship between China and Nigeria, the Chinese Confucius Institutes of the University of Lagos, (UNILAG) on October 13 staged a road show.

According to the Chinese Director of the institute, Prof. Wang Yongjing, the event is to celebrate the friendship between China and Nigeria and part of which is the visit of President Muhammadu Buhari to China.

“Though, this is our 9th year of teaching Chinese in the school, this time we want to strengthen our relationship by helping the local people to learn about China and about our Confucius institute.

“We have been teaching Chinese in a few primary and secondary schools across Lagos State and as well as adults for this session. We have over 2500 students, including primary and secondary school pupils, but we believe we can achieve more than this.

Wang said the objective of the road show is to make the local people know what and where we are. “We have held series of proficiency test and help the local people learn the martial arts,” she said.

Nigerian director of the institute, Prof. Segun Awonusi, in his speech said, just the way Nigeria and China celebrate their Independence Day on October 1, we feel this is a unique season for us to celebrate both countries, get Nigerians to appreciate China, just as we have Chinese appreciating Nigeria.

Since the inception of the institution Awonusi said, “we have given more than 50 scholarships to Nigerians who have gone to China to study and also trained more than100 other locally.
