All you need do is to find out if your school is among schools that have begun student entrepreneurial skill project that allows students work and study on campus, and register for job placement. Schools that have started it do consider their students first before others.
Some tertiary institutions across the country that have started this programme have small money yielding ventures like carwash, water bottling company, farms and others, where students can work on part time basis and earn money. Most times, these schools engage more students from their school and a few hands from outside the school. The main aim is not to use the students as guinea pigs, as some people would say, but to teach and instill the spirit of enterprise; make them know that there is a great difference between classroom teaching/learning and workplace ethics. Another thing, these students sometime take away with them is the entrepreneurial skill, which they learn.
No matter how one sees it, working for ones school comes with its own advantages. One of which is, it places one in better position to know more about the school, and even relate better with lecturers and fellow students. Another is that, it could facilitate one’s pursuit for higher degrees and, as well, provide easy access to the use the school’s facilities for research, seminars and others. And for those dreaming of pitching their tents with the academics, pick up lecturing job upon graduating, jobs like this build that mindset; as it gives one the privilege of knowing how lecturers behave outside the classroom, their daily routine and other things one may want to find out. It does not leave one ignorant of the politics that exists among the lecturers, the academic/governing board and even among students and lecturers.
Perhaps, you are not fortunate to be engaged in any of the school’s small-scale outfits, it would not be too bad an idea to work with the Student’s Affairs, as a receptionist, office assistant or other units, like the kitchen, garden, zoo or do anything for the school to earn money. While, one should not be inordinate at making money, one should not throw away any opening to work for his/her school at any level while the programme lasts.
Unlike other places of interest to work, the school environment enables one to set high academic standard for oneself because the ambience and brainiacs would ginger one be on his/her toes to study and come out with grades that would want to make the school to retain you.
However, know it that tertiary institutions are not the right place to earn fantastic pay as a part timer, but they surely create room for one to study, knowing that the job thing is a secondary activity. In fact, the goals is to see you excel in your studies; come out a better student.
