How customer behaviour changed Nexar’s growth strategy

One of the biggest assumptions startups make is that growth comes from building more products.

Sometimes, it doesn’t.

For Nexar Digital Services, growth came from paying closer attention to how customers actually behaved.

The company noticed that users rarely came looking for just one service. Someone buying a virtual number often returns for an eSIM before travelling. Another customer paying for an international subscription might also need a gift card or a quick way to top up data. What looked like separate customer journeys were, in reality, parts of the same digital experience.

That observation changed how the company thought about growth. Instead of building individual products that solved isolated problems, Nexar began expanding around customer needs, bringing related digital services into one platform.

Today, the platform supports services including virtual numbers, eSIMs, gift cards, bill payments, airtime and data purchases, crypto transactions and social media solutions. But according to the company, the goal was never simply to increase the number of products.

“We realised customers weren’t asking for more apps, they were looking for fewer steps,” says Kolawole Gracious, CEO of Nexar Digital Services. “That shifted how we thought about product development. Every new service we introduce has to make the overall experience simpler, not more complicated.”

That thinking reflects a broader shift across Africa’s digital economy. As more people work remotely, run online businesses and rely on digital tools every day, convenience has become just as important as functionality. Users increasingly prefer platforms that reduce friction and allow them to complete multiple tasks without constantly switching between providers.

For startups, that presents an important lesson. Growth isn’t always about launching the next product. Sometimes it’s about understanding how existing customers behave and designing around those habits.

For Nexar, that insight continues to shape its next phase of growth. Rather than building products in isolation, the company says it will continue expanding its ecosystem based on how people actually live and work online. As Africa’s digital economy matures, companies are likely to be judged less by how many products they offer and more by how seamlessly those products work together, and for Nexar, that’s the bet it’s making.
