NDPC, Meta launch two-year campaign on data privacy

Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), warns of a sustained and intensifying wave of DDoS attacks disrupting digital infrastructure

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) and Meta Platforms Inc. have launched a two-year campaign aimed at promoting data privacy awareness, strengthening regulatory capacity and enhancing protection for data subjects across the country.

Known as the Meta-Supported Initiatives for Data Protection (M-SIDP), the initiative forms part of a court-approved settlement reached after investigations into Meta’s data processing practices in Nigeria.

The development was announced in a statement by the Head of the Commission’s Media Unit, Itunu Dosekun. According to NDPC, the programme is designed to deepen public understanding of data privacy rights while supporting efforts to build a safer and more accountable digital environment.

“This initiative is in connection with the Commission’s regulatory process involving Meta Platforms, Inc., following investigations into the company’s data processing practices in Nigeria,” the statement said.

The NDPC explained that the dispute was resolved in 2025 through a court-approved settlement, which included Meta’s commitment to fund and support a range of public-facing data protection measures over two years.

According to the commission, “the matter was concluded in 2025 through a court-approved settlement. As part of the settlement, Meta committed to supporting a two-year programme of public-facing data protection measures that aligns with the objectives of the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023.”

The programme will focus on governance, research and development, digital safety and sustainability, as well as capacity building for Data Protection Officers (DPOs) and Data Protection Compliance Organisations (DPCOs), it added.

It will also feature extensive public awareness campaigns, particularly targeting vulnerable groups and educating citizens on their rights and responsibilities under Nigeria’s data protection framework.
