The addition of 7,219 new domain names to the .ng registered in the month of April, has taken Nigeria’s active domain number to 111, 146.

According to the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA), the growth of the .ng domain names is encouraging.

A domain name is an identification string that defines a realm of administrative autonomy, authority or control within the Internet. For Nigeria, it is the .ng.

NiRA disclosed that 7,319 (fresh registration and renewals) were registered in March 2018.

Statistics made available by NiRA showed that in February, it registered 4,066, renewed 2,211, and transferred 63 domain names. For March, 4,688 were registered, 2,631 were renewed and 157 transferred. In April, 4,631 domain names were registered, 2,588 renewed, and 95 .ng were transferred.

Further analysis of the data showed that there were 106,736 active domain names split into second level (15,443), and third level (87,491) in February.

For March, there were 19,950 (second level) and 89,009 at the third level, to make a total of 108,599. The figure rose in April with second level registration of 19,889, while the third level saw 91,257 domain names, bringing the total to 111,146.

NiRA President, Sunday Folayan, said the growth in the number of .ng domain name registrations, and the adopted price charter, is based on domain registration landmarks at the second level.

He added that all NiRA activities seek to create awareness of the Nigerian online identity, while the price charter seeks to progressively reduce the price of the .ng domain name based on the number of active 2nd level .ng domain names.

Meanwhile, NiRA said the 2018 .ng Awards is scheduled to hold on July 6, in Lagos. The 2018 .ng Awards is the third edition of the .ng Awards.

The Association said it appreciated the active role(s) everyone is playing in developing the DNS industry in Nigeria, and look forward to a successful 2018 .ng Awards Ceremony.

NiRA in a statement on the awards, said to vote for any preferred organisation in the different award categories, voters should cast their votes via www.nira.org.ng/ngawards

According to them, voting started on May 10, and would run till 22nd. “Members of the public are encouraged to cast their vote for their preferred organisation(s),” it stated.
