Nigerian scholar Ridwan Olabiyi honoured for breakthrough in manufacturing

Ridwan Olabiyi

Ridwan Olalekan Olabiyi, a distinguished Nigerian researcher and Research Associate at the School of Computing and Augmented Intelligence, Arizona State University (ASU), has garnered attention for his groundbreaking work in the field of advanced manufacturing.. His innovative research was recently showcased at the prestigious International Manufacturing Science and Engineering Conference (MSEC) held in Knoxville, Tennessee, USA held  from  17th to 21st of June, 2024.

Olabiyi was awarded the highly competitive National Science Foundation (NSF) Early Career Researcher Travel Award, a prestigious honor that underscores the significant impact and innovative potential of his work. This award fully sponsored his participation at the conference, covering registration and accommodation, reflecting the high esteem in which his research is held by the global scientific community.

At the conference, Olabiyi presented his revolutionary work titled “Characterization of Elastoplastic Properties of Additively Manufactured Specimens from Indentation Data Using Stochastic Inverse Modeling.” His research addresses critical challenges in additive manufacturing by accurately predicting mechanical properties such as Young’s modulus, yield strength, and strain hardening exponent through non-destructive testing methods. His groundbreaking stochastic inverse modeling approach not only enhances accuracy and reliability but also significantly reduces the time and cost associated with traditional destructive testing methods.

In an interview following his presentation, Olabiyi explained, “Traditional destructive testing methods are expensive and time-consuming. Our approach uses indentation data and stochastic inverse modeling to accurately estimate material properties, making the process faster and more cost-effective.”

The practical applicantions of Olabiyi’s research span multiple sectors, including aerospace, automotive, healthcare, and infrastructure. Importantly, his contributions are particularly valuable for Nigeria, as his methodologies promise to bolster the country’s burgeoning manufacturing sector, fostering innovation, increasing efficiency, and reducing reliance on costly importation of industrial technologies.

Olabiyi’s impressive academic and professional journey, marked by numerous honors and awards including the Amazon SCOT/INFORMS fellowship Award and multiple fellowships at ASU, highlights his position as one of the leading voices in his field. His consistent demonstration of excellence has earned him recognition as a prominent figure making significant contributions to global manufacturing science and engineering.

Olabiyi emphasized his commitment to leveraging his research for broader impact: “I’m passionate about using technology to solve real-world problems, particularly in Nigeria. My goal is to contribute meaningfully to the country’s industrial growth and innovation ecosystem.”

Committed to advancing global manufacturing capabilities and dedicated to contributing to Nigeria’s technological growth, Olabiyi stands as a remarkable example of intellectual excellence, global impact, and national pride.
