Expert tasks educationists on measures to mitigate gaps in learning
To shape the future of learning in schools, educators have been urged to put in place measures to mitigate gaps in the system.
The Administrative Manager and Public Relations Officer, Jextoban Secondary School, Lagos and Ogun states, Dr. Solesi Abayomi, stated this at the 68th Founder’s Day of United High School, Ikenne, Ogun State.
Speaking on the theme: ‘Shaping the future of Education in United High School,’ Abayomi listed factors such as teachers behaviour and personality, teaching methods, parenting habits and involvement, peer issues and instability, learning environment, economy, lack of funds and non-availability of teachers and shortage of trained teachers as influencing students’ motivation in learning.
He said such measures should include adequate provision of state of art facilities to meet current educational needs.
Abayomi also called for introduction of students to relevant courses that would address needs in the labour market.
He noted that education has a very important role to help students identify and develop their talents through learning opportunities and programmes.
He said individuals have unique skills and whether each person will succeed in developing them or not, depends on ambition and curriculum.Abayomi noted that there is a big gap between what the world needs and what Nigeria’s education system is designed for.
“In fact the skill gaps in creativity and problem solving make hiring difficult, and nearly half of job tasks may be lost to automation within the next two decades. We need to start to think differently about how we prepare young people.
“The major challenges in the next few years will be coherent and customised learning, a rethinking of human machine hybrid work. To cope with these challenges, 21st century learning must prepare teachers to educate learners on how to function effectively.
At the event, winners of quiz and debate competitions were given awards, while outstanding alumni received awards of excellence for their contributions.
