Inioluwa GEM is a talented songwriter, producer, recording and performing artist with a vocal powerhouse who belts out tunes and inspirations like the proverbial pied piper.
Having started singing quite early in life, she went on to lead the University Joint Christian Mission (UJCM) choir of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife in the song “Ojo ola” during her university days.
Recognition of her work in the Nollywood music scene began with her soundtracks to the movie, ‘Beauty and the Beast’, a RoK Nigeria project. Since then, she has collaborated with eminent Nollywood producers like Niyi Akinmolayan, Tolu Lord Tanner and Chichi Nworah, which earned her “The queen of Nollywood music”.
About her projects, she said: “One of the first movie soundtrack projects that got me some attention was the one I did for ‘Beauty and the Beast’. Recently, I did the soundtrack for ‘Strangers’ by Biodun Stephens which was number one on Netflix for weeks after its release. I also did the soundtrack for her most recently released project, ‘Sista’.
“The pressure of being one of only a few women in the industry has been overwhelming at times, but I keep going because I believe in what I have to offer. I have plans to launch my own music career using the alias, ‘Ariija’ to explore genres like Afro-pop, Afro-soul and Alte music. I also intend to continue to come up with even more creative soundtracks for the Nollywood movie industry”.
Inioluwa has a deep understanding of world music, and posses the prowling charisma of a pop musician. Her love and passion for music and its deep parts can be seen and heard in her soulful expressions, but she is not limited by the walls of soul, folk and Pop music.
Her work on the soundtracks for the popular Nollywood movie, ‘Sista’ ranked number one on Amazon prime Naija, weeks after its premiere. Through her employment of old cultural ideas in a pop construct, she was able to introduce a wide range of people to interesting and previously underplayed geographical flavors.
One of the joys of mentorship and leadership is the ability to pass on the baton to others. Inioluwa GEM is not just running with the baton, she is running with the beacon.
