One of the attributes of God is that he is Omni-benevolent, which means, He is always good and kind. To that end, everything God does is for the good of those who love Him and who are called according to His purpose. If God is inherently good as the Psalmist declares, then He cannot afford not to be caring towards his children. “You are good, and do good; teach me your status,” (Psalm 119:68).

God is closer to us in our difficulties than we can imagine. One of the titles of God is, Jehovah Shammah, meaning the “God who is there.” God is always there for us in times of need. God’s care over Israel in the wilderness is no less than how He cares for us now. Isaiah says: “In all their suffering he also suffered, and he personally rescued them. In his love and mercy he redeemed them. He lifted them up and carried them through all the years,” (Isaiah 63:9 NLT).

God did not abandon the children of Israel in their captivity. In their most trying times, He assured them of his visitation and that he had a grand plan for them, which indicates His care for Israel. His word to Israel was: “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart,” (Jeremiah 29:11-13 NKJV).

Even when we pass through the most trying times as it is now for many families, God’s promise is, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me,” (Psalms 23:4 NKJV).

Jacob testified of God’s faithfulness in caring for him all through his lifetime. Starting from when he left home to avoid the fierce anger of Esau whom he had cheated to the twenty or more years he spent in the house of his uncle, Laban; God providentially catered for him. Jacob testified of God’s superintendence over him thus: “And he blessed Joseph, and said: “God, before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked, The God who has fed me all my life long to this day…” (Genesis 48:15 -16 NKJV). I pray we have a similar testimony of God’s loving care for us.

When God said to Abram in a vision, “… Do not be afraid, Abram, I am your shield, and your exceedingly great reward,” He was trying to assure Abram that he cared for him. Abram’s response to God is further proof of this. “But Abram said: “Lord God, what will You give me, seeing I go childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” Then Abram said: “Look, You have given me no offspring; indeed one born in my house is my heir,” (Genesis 15:2-3 NKJV). In the ensuing dialogue, God took Abram by the hand pointed to the stars in the sky and assured him that his descendants would be as numerous as the stars of heaven. It is because of Abram’s belief in God that sealed the deal between him and God in perpetuity.

God cares. He is the One who says: “The young lions lack and suffer hunger; but those who seek the Lord shall not lack any good thing,” (Psalm 34:10-12).
