Darkness looms in Kano as labour union shutdown KEDCO headquarters

Kano metropolis and its environs may soon be cut off of energy supply as National of Electricity Employees (NUEE) shut down activities of Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO).

The labour union early Monday morning in their hundreds picketed KEDCO headquarters in Kano and forceful shutdown all official activities indefinitely.

Addressing journalists at KEDCO headquarters, NUEE Northwest Chairman Comrade Ado Riruwai disclosed the action of the workers became pertinent to demonstrate their displeasure over management failure to remits worker’s 72 months pension benefits.

Besides, Comrade Riruwai, lamented action of KEDCO management’s continue victimization of workers especially union leaders for agitating staff welfare and improve working condition of staff.

The labour leader accused the electricity distribution company of neglecting the implementation of Medicare package for workers as contain in the contract agreement, despite the hazardous working condition.

He accused KEDCO of promoting imperialism and wickedness against the rights of Workers as enshrined in the Nigeria Constitution which frown at victimization of workers while demanding freedom at works.

When contacted for inquiry, KEDCO spokesperson Sani Bala who confirmed management indebtedness of workers pension however insisted that management has remitted part of the claims.

According to Bala, the new management of KEDCO inherited huge sum of unremitted workers entitlement but explained that the narrative had since changed in the last eight months.

The spokesperson added that besides the inherited liability, he stressed that the new management has ensured prompt remittance since the taken over from previous management.

He appealed to the worrying workers to remain patient in their demands assuring the new managing director is taking proactive measure to address the challenge.
