Oluyoye’s 30-day hug marathon bridges cultures, spreads joy across two continents

In what will be considered an inspiring 30-day mission that spanned from London to Lagos, Oluwatosin Oluyoye aimed to set a new Guinness World Record for the most hugs given in a single month. His 60,000 hugs goal journey sought to surpass the current record of 50,361 hugs, set by Tomidokoro in Japan in 2011.

The mission began on June 22, 2024, in London, where Oluyoye embraced locals and visitors from around the world, each hug serving as a powerful symbol of human connection and kindness. The reception in London was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing how the simple act of a hug brought comfort and brightness to their day. A standout moment occurred when a young boy from Germany enthusiastically declared, “This is the best Guinness World Record attempt ever!”

On July 17, Oluyoye continued his journey to Lagos, with 31,220 hugs already completed. The final leg of his mission added another 9,590 hugs, bringing his total to 40,810. Despite hugging not being a deeply rooted tradition in Nigeria, the initiative was met with enthusiasm from students, market vendors, and youths across Lagos. A particularly memorable moment occurred when an interview on Wazobia FM Lagos prompted listeners to join Oluyoye at Chicken Republic in CMS, leaving their cars to participate in the hug marathon.

Since returning to the UK, Oluyoye has been inundated with positive feedback, with many people sharing how the simple act of a hug lifted their spirits. Inspired by the response, Oluyoye is already planning another record attempt and is actively seeking sponsors to support future initiatives.

He expressed deep gratitude to his teams in London and Lagos, as well as to his family and friends for their unwavering support. He offered special thanks to his uncle in Essex, Yomi Oye, and Mr. Ifeanyi Okoye for their encouragement throughout the journey.

The 30-day mission highlights the transformative power of simple acts of kindness, which Oluyoye believes that such efforts can heal, improve mental health, and spread positivity, especially during challenging times.
