I get it! You know what temperament you have and of course this has helped you to navigate life’s journey perfectly while maintaining your steeze. But permit me to shock you that there are a lot you probably haven’t realised about your temperament. Okay, relax! It’s not that serious. I will let you know the hidden secrets of your temperament in clear terms.

What is temperament?

Temperament is a fundamental aspect of our personalities, shaping how we perceive the world, interact with others, and respond to various situations. While many are familiar with the four primary temperaments—Sanguine, Choleric, Melancholic, and Phlegmatic—there’s much more to these personality types than meets the eye.
Knowing more about your temperament will help you to appreciate your own traits which eventually leads to an improved relationship and personal growth.

The four temperaments

I know you are already aware of your traits and maybe those of others but it’s not a bad idea if we revisit each in brief, right?

Sanguine: Outgoing, sociable, and enthusiastic.
Choleric: Determined, goal-oriented, and assertive.
Melancholic: Analytical, detail-oriented, and thoughtful.
Phlegmatic: Calm, dependable, and peace-loving.

Each of these temperaments has its own set of strengths and weaknesses, which are often discussed. However, there are deeper layers to each that are less commonly explored; You and I will do justice to it now.

Hidden sides of each temperament

Sanguine– social butterfly but highly insecure

Strengths: Sanguines are typically seen as the life of the party. They’re energetic, charismatic, and have a natural ability to connect with others. Their optimistic outlook helps them navigate life’s challenges with a positive attitude, making them resilient in the face of setbacks.

Weaknesses: However, what people often don’t realise is that Sanguines can struggle with deep insecurities. Their need for social interaction and approval can stem from a fear of being alone or unloved. Beneath their cheerful exterior, Sanguines may grapple with feelings of self-doubt, leading them to seek constant validation from others. This can make them prone to people-pleasing behaviours, sometimes at the expense of their own well-being.

Choleric— Bold and bossy yet vulnerable

Strengths: Cholerics are natural leaders, known for their determination, confidence, and ability to take charge. They’re goal-driven and often excel in positions of authority where their decisiveness can shine.

Weaknesses: Yet, the Choleric temperament comes with a hidden vulnerability. While they appear strong and unshakable, Cholerics can be deeply sensitive to criticism. Their assertiveness often masks an inner fear of failure or inadequacy, which can drive them to push themselves—and others—beyond healthy limits. This fear can also make them resistant to delegating tasks or trusting others, as they may feel that only they can ensure success.

Melancholic: perfectionist but always doubtful of their abilities

Strengths: Melancholics are known for their attention to detail, thoughtfulness, and strong sense of duty. They’re often the ones who go above and beyond to ensure that everything is done to the highest standard.

Weaknesses: However, this perfectionism can be a two-edged sword. Melancholics often set unrealistically high standards for themselves and others, leading to a constant sense of dissatisfaction. What people might not know is that Melancholics can be highly self-critical, often considering failures or shortcomings as personal flaws. This can lead to chronic stress, anxiety, and a reluctance to take risks for fear of not meeting their own expectations.

Phlegmatic: daydreamers and Doers

Strengths: Phlegmatics are the epitome of calm and composure. They’re excellent at maintaining harmony and are often sought out for their ability to mediate conflicts and offer sound advice. People often consider them to be daydreamers only, but they are also goal getters who work tirelessly to ensure their goals are achieved. They work best when under pressure.

Weaknesses: Despite their calmness, Phlegmatics may struggle with indecisiveness and a fear of confrontation. Their desire to keep the peace can lead them to suppress their own needs and desires, resulting in feelings of resentment or frustration. Additionally, Phlegmatics might avoid taking action or making decisions to evade potential conflict, which can cause them to miss out on opportunities for growth and fulfilment.

As a person, it’s possible to have more than one temperament, each from the different genes you inherit from your parents or ancestors. For instance, you can be MELPHLEG– Melancholic and phlegmatic, CHOLSAN— Choleric and Sanguine, etc. Whatever strengths or weaknesses you have, how you use them is what matters for you and everyone around you.
