Research has uncovered a cause of declining motor function and increased frailty in tiny ageing worms — and a way to slow it down.

Worms in the toilet? It’s a gross thought, but it happens. Those tiny, slimy creatures can find their way into your plumbing and eventually emerge in your toilet bowl and on the floors. And you don’t want to use chemicals, as they can be hazardous to health when used continuously for a long time. But don’t worry, there are a few natural tips you can use to prevent this from happening. See below:

1. Keep Your Toilet Clean
This may seem obvious, but it’s the most important thing you can do. Regularly scrub your toilet bowl with a disinfectant cleaner. Pay attention to the area around the rim, as this is where worms often hide. You should also clean the outside of your toilet and the floor around it. Dr. Emily Green, a renowned entomologist, said: “Preventing worms in your toilet often comes down to maintaining a clean and dry environment, which can significantly reduce the risk of infestation.”

2. Flush Regularly
Don’t let your toilet sit unused for long periods. This can allow bacteria and other organisms to grow, which can attract worms. Make sure to flush your toilet after each use. Look back to ensure the toilet is properly flushed, and possibly wipe the rim with a tissue after flushing.

3. Vinegar and Baking Soda
Create a powerful cleaning solution by pouring a cup of white vinegar into the toilet bowl, followed by a half-cup of baking soda. Let it sit for a few minutes before scrubbing.

4. Use Salt Solution
Salt is another great repellent for worms. Regularly sprinkle some salt or salt solution in areas where you are likely to find worms after thoroughly washing the toilet. Do this at least two to three times a week and say goodbye to worms in your toilet. You can also apply some salt to the toilet after washing properly. This works because salt can dehydrate worms, making it difficult for them to survive. It is also a natural disruptive solution for their habitat.

5. Try Lemon Juice
Lemon juice is a natural disinfectant that can also help eliminate odours and deter pests. Simply pour a cup of lemon juice into the toilet bowl and let it sit overnight. Wash and flush properly before use.

6. Repair and Ventilate
Promptly repair any leaks in your plumbing system and fix cracks. Worms are slimy creatures that can easily find ways to wiggle into the toilet when there are cracks in the tiles or floors. Also, excessive moisture can create a breeding ground for worms. So do it the minimalist way when using water. After a bath, be sure to dry the toilet floor with a broom so you don’t have water staying for long before drying up. Lastly, ventilate the bathroom to reduce humidity levels.
