Two men were killed and several others injured in a multiple-vehicle accident at the Rainbow bus stop along the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway in Lagos over the weekend.
The accident occurred when a MAN truck, reportedly experiencing brake failure, collided with a Honda Accord saloon car and two commercial buses. Travelling at high speed, the truck lost control and rammed into the Honda, which crashed into the buses.
The incident caused significant traffic congestion on the expressway until officials from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and other emergency responders arrived.
Nosa Okunbor, spokesperson for LASEMA, confirmed the accident and stated that the bodies of the deceased were handed over to the police for transport to the mortuary. The four vehicles involved in the crash were also handed over to police officers from the Festac Division for further investigation.
“Upon arrival at the scene at 5:52 p.m., the LASEMA Response Team (LRT) discovered a multiple accident involving a MAN truck with registration number KTU 793 YE, carrying groundnut oil; a Honda Accord saloon car with registration number KTU 223 GH; and two commercial buses,” Okunbor said.
“Further investigation revealed that the MAN truck suffered a mechanical failure at high speed, lost control, and subsequently crashed into the other vehicles. Tragically, two men lost their lives in the incident, while several others sustained various injuries and were attended to by LASAMBUS.”
The four vehicles involved in the crash suffered extensive damage. The LRT, LASAMBUS, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos State Fire & Rescue Service, and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) all participated in the rescue and recovery operation.
