Kogi Central Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has expressed profound sorrow over the tragic Felele auto crash that claimed the lives of 10 students in Lokoja.

Chief Press Secretary to the senator, Israel Arogbonlo, in a statement, quoted her as describing the incident as a heartbreaking loss for their families, the Federal University Lokoja, and the entire Kogi community.

In an emotional statement, she extended her condolences to the bereaved families, acknowledging the deep pain of losing young, promising lives.

“No words can truly capture the grief and anguish of losing a child, a sibling, a friend. My heart goes out to the families affected by this unspeakable tragedy. May their young souls rest in peace, and may their memories be a source of strength in this time of immense sorrow,” she stated.

Beyond mourning the loss, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan called for immediate action to prevent further tragedies along the Felele axis, a notorious black spot for road accidents in Lokoja. She emphasized the urgent need for federal intervention, including road expansion and improved infrastructure to reduce congestion and accidents; stricter regulation of heavy-duty truck movement along student-populated areas; and enforcement of safety measures to prevent reckless driving and overspeeding.

“This is not the first time lives have been lost on this stretch of road. It is heartbreaking that families continue to grieve due to preventable accidents. We must act now to stop this cycle of tragedy,” she stressed.

The senator reaffirmed her commitment to working with relevant authorities to ensure that students and road users are protected. She pledged to push for policies and infrastructural improvements that will make the roads safer for all.

As the affected families mourn, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan urged authorities to prioritize safety measures and ensure that such a devastating loss never happens again.
