In the last few years, I have been fortunate enough to experience several remarkable dance productions, so my expectations for ‘The Solstice’, choreographed and performed by Emmanuel Haruna, were high and it did not disappoint. From the stunning set and costumes to the powerful choreography and the dancers’ captivating performances, everything came together seamlessly to create a breathtaking production that I would watch again in a heart beat.

Haruna’s choreography and direction told the story beautifully an impressive feat when relying solely on movement and music. I was completely drawn in from the first note to the final moment. The expressive score guided the dancers through a vivid, emotional journey. Haruna added his own contemporary, dynamic twist to the narrative. The performance began with a depiction of the longest night of the year, where a lone figure Haruna himself searches for light and warmth. As dawn breaks, the stage transforms, bursting into vibrant life, symbolising the renewal and hope that The Solstice brings. Haruna’s portrayal of the central character’s journey from darkness to light was deeply moving, with moments of struggle, resilience, and finally, joy.

The production’s magic extended beyond the choreography. The costumes, hair, and makeup were nothing short of extraordinary. Reflecting the striking contrast between the cold, shadowed world of the night and the radiant colors of the reborn day, the costume design boosted the emotional impact of the story. The creative vision of the design team was among the most impressive I’ve seen, perfectly complementing Haruna’s bold choreography.

The entire cast delivered breathtaking performances, but special mention must go to the duo representing the twin forces of dusk and dawn danced by Charles Nwoke and Joy Nwoha. Their synchrony and expressive movement brought moments of lightness and humor, providing a much-needed difference to the passion of Haruna’s journey. Their playful, fluid dancing and expressive connection made them unforgettable.

The Solstice wouldn’t have been the same without the astonishing attention to detail in its visual presentation. The transformation from the shadowy, desolate first act to the vibrant, sun-drenched second act was made even more powerful through the striking costume and set design, reinforcing the production’s message of rebirth and renewal.

It was a truly stunning performance a triumph for Haruna and his entire creative team.
