You are on your own if you bring shame to Borno, says Shettima

Borno State governor Kashim Shettima
Borno State Governor Kashim Shettima yesterday warned that any of the council chairmen that dare bring shame to the Borno state government through any act suspected to be support or links with Boko Haram will be on his own.

Shettima gave the warning yesterday while inaugurating a 27-member caretaker chairmen committee at Government House, Maiduguri. He also insisted that any of the chairmen who can’t relocate from Maiduguri to his local government area was free to reject his appointment and be replaced immediately.

The warnings on Boko Haram was based on recent cases in which a caretaker Chairman and Vice of two local government areas were arrested by the military over allegations connected with the Boko Haram insurgents.

He said they would not only disown such a person but take legal steps towards making such a person unfit to hold any public office associated with state and its citizens. He said over 90 per cent of the people in the state are vehemently opposed to the activities of Boko Haram. Shettima said whoever shows any form of support for Boko Haram insurgents is an enemy of Borno people and an enemy of humanity.

Shettima had earlier said he would not tolerate instances where chairmen of most of the 27 local government areas hide in Maiduguri instead of living with their people, including Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) that returned to liberated communities.

Commissioner for Local Government and Emirate Affairs, Usman Zanna said the 27 caretaker chairmen were appointed after thorough assessment of their backgrounds, competence and loyalty to the administration and the All Progressives Congress (APC).
