Govt is releasing funds to tackle medical brain drain, says don

Provost College of Medicine University of Lagos, Prof. Ademola Oremosu has disclosed the Visitor to the university, President Bola Tinubu is releasing funds to address medical brain drain syndrome and improve capacity.

Speaking at the 2023/2024 Medical & Dental induction and Award ceremony, he said: “President Tinubu said one of the ways of mitigating the migration is to increase capacity, so a lot of funds have been released to the university to provide more facilities and increase the numbers of students we are admitting. We are not really against people travelling abroad, what we are saying is that whenever they travel, they should use that opportunity to improve themselves, so that when they return, they can give high level manpower services in the country.”

Saying the world continues to need medical personnels, he further advised the students, “I want you to uphold highest standard of the professionalism and empathy. Treat every patient with dignity and respect, recognising that behind every diagnosis, there is a human being in need of care and reassurance.”

In his lecture, an alumnus of the institution, Dr. Omotayo Ojo suggested, “the future belongs to those who dare. Be bold. Have faith, not just in your training, but in yourself. You have all it takes to compete and excel on any global stage. Do not take your capability for granted, and never let fear limit your ambition. The world is not waiting for the average, it is waiting for the exceptional.”

Chairman, Nigeria Medical Association, Lagos State, Dr. Saheed Babajide Kehinde, urged President Tinubu to rejig the Ministry of Heath at the federal level and bring people with experience to address the brain drain syndrome. He further said the president must remove taxes on call duty allowance.

A total number of ninety one medical and seventeen dental students were inducted.
