Celebrated Nigerian comedian and humanitarian, Ambassador Francis Agoda, better known as I Go Dye, has added a new feather to his illustrious cap with his recent appointment as a Global Peace and Development Ambassador. The prestigious recognition was conferred by the International Association of World Peace Advocates (IAWPA), further cementing his status as a global voice for peace, justice, and sustainable development.
The appointment—officially endorsed by the Senate and Governing Council of IAWPA—acknowledges I Go Dye’s longstanding commitment to humanitarian service, conflict resolution, and advocacy for underrepresented communities. IAWPA, an organization affiliated with the United Nations, operates under Special Consultative Status with the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and participates in the UN Global Compact, making this honour both symbolic and strategic.
In this new diplomatic role, Amb. Agoda will work closely with various ministries of foreign affairs within the United Nations framework, advancing multilateral diplomacy, promoting peacebuilding initiatives, and accelerating the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across regions.
To facilitate his new responsibilities, he has been issued a UN diplomatic passport (Laissez-Passer), an official international diplomatic ID, and a UNV Roster Code. Additionally, he has been assigned a diplomatic license plate—Corps Diplomatique EPA CD 79, marking his participation in global peace missions.
From Tragedy to Advocacy: A Journey of Purpose
Behind the laughter lies a story of resilience. In 1997, during the violent Ijaw-Itsekiri conflict in Warri, Delta State, I Go Dye survived a near-death experience that claimed the lives of three of his close friends. Shot and scarred, he chose not to retreat into silence but instead rose as a strong advocate for peace and social equity.
By 1999, he had become one of the Niger Delta’s most vocal voices, calling for disarmament and the peaceful resolution of conflict. His documentary, “Peace in Sight,” co-produced with the Nigerian government and the United Nations, captured his mission to end violence and rebuild war-torn communities.
Comedy as a Catalyst for Change
While comedy brought him fame, I Go Dye’s bold use of satire for social critique has earned him a unique place in public discourse. His fearless commentaries on governance, corruption, and leadership have resonated with audiences far beyond entertainment circles.
Over a career spanning three decades, he has transformed laughter into a tool for enlightenment—using his influence to speak truth to power. With over 300 national and international awards, he remains the most decorated stand-up comedian in Africa.
A Heart for Humanity
During the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019, I Go Dye once again demonstrated his deep commitment to humanity by donating his $9.5 million FAPOH Mansion to the Nigerian government as an isolation center. He also distributed relief materials to vulnerable communities, offering much-needed support at a critical time.
His passion for development is also reflected in his earlier appointments as a UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Ambassador in 2014, and later as a UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Ambassador in 2016. Through these roles, he has consistently championed youth empowerment, anti-corruption initiatives, and education for underserved populations.
Recognised at Home and Abroad
I Go Dye’s global influence has earned him a seat among the world’s most celebrated change-makers. In 2017, he received the Africa Child Prize, sharing this prestigious honour with names like Dr. Nelson Mandela, Prof. Wole Soyinka, President Olusegun Obasanjo, and President Adama Barrow of The Gambia.
The same year, he was appointed Africa Child Ambassador by the African Union, in recognition of his advocacy for youth and vulnerable children across the continent. In 2018, he became a Goodwill Ambassador for UKAid’s MADACT (Making A Difference Against Corruption Today), reflecting his commitment to integrity and ethical leadership in Africa.
