Don’t denigrate Nigeria, redefine its image, NIPR president urges inductees

The President, Nigeria Institute of Public Relations, Dr. Ike Neliaku, has advocated the need for information managers to renew hope for a greater nation with possibilities.

Besides, Dr. Neliaku reminded that reputation managers hold the ethical responsibility to be patriotic and committed to strengthening national values.

The NIPR President gave the caution on Thursday during the Institute’s special membership induction ceremony for 71 information officers of the Kano State Government.

Dr. Neliaku believed Nigeria remained one of the great countries in the world with huge value and potential to be among developed nations, and cautioned against denigrating the country.

He insisted those nations being celebrated couldn’t have been better than Nigeria; if not for the opportunity the country lacks, the reverse would have been the case.

While taking the new inductees through the professional oath of NIPR, Dr. Neliaku said the Institute was established by Decree No. 16, June 1, 1970, now Cap 114, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

He said practitioners under the law are expected to exhibit a high level of professionalism, reputable character, and attitude while adding value to society.

The NIPR President emphasised that, as a member of the Global Alliance of Public Relations, the new members now possess the certification to practice information and reputation management across 126 member countries.

He urged the new members sponsored by the Kano State Government to widen their horizons in the global practice of public relations and demonstrate a high sense of responsibility while adding value to their line of duties.

A PR lecturer, Faculty of Communication, Bayero University, Kano, Associate Professor Sule Yau Sule, also charged the inductees to uphold the ethical standards and reputation of the practice while handling their duties.

Sule, who is a Fellow and high-ranking member of the Institute, harped on discipline and truth as core instructions, and wanted the new members to consistently protect the dignity of the practice.

On his part, Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Abdullahi Ibrahim Waiya, said the successful sponsorship of 71 public relations officers for the professional practice is a testament to the Government’s reform on the information system and ethical conduct.

Waiya, who is part of the new members, urged the beneficiaries to take advantage of their new professional garments to improve information management and the corporate reputation of the government.
