The Ebonyi State Government has disbursed cash and food relief materials worth over N50 million to 100 victims of windstorm and flood disasters in Ndeze Inyimagu, Abakaliki Local Council.

The support is aimed at cushioning the impact of the tragedy that occurred on May 27, 2025. During the distribution in Abakaliki, the Commissioner for Human Capital Development and Monitoring, Mrs Ann Aligwe, said each beneficiary received N500,000 and two bags of 10kg rice. She stressed that the gesture reflects Governor Francis Nwifuru’s commitment to the welfare of all Ebonyi residents.

“Many thought it was a political promise, but today you have seen that His Excellency is a governor who follows through on his promises”. These funds and food items are meant to help alleviate your losses, and we expect you to use them wisely,” she stated.

Following the disaster, the State Emergency Management Agency (EBSEMA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) conducted impact assessments and assured victims of timely intervention.

A minute’s silence was observed in honour of Mrs Theresa Nwaji, who died in the Ndeze Inyimagu windstorm, as well as eight others who recently lost their lives in flooding in Afikpo.

The commissioner urged residents in disaster-prone areas, especially those near riverbanks and lowlands, to heed early warnings from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and consider relocating. The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr Henry Nworie, reiterated the government’s commitment to responding promptly to emergencies.

Some beneficiaries, including Stephen Nwoji Uguru, Andaline Edeh, and James Ominyi, expressed gratitude to the state government, NEMA, and EBSEMA for their assistance. They also appealed for more long-term measures to help rebuild their livelihoods.
