Two injured as speeding tipper collides with tanker, trucks in Lagos

Several motorists narrowly escaped death yesterday when a tipper truck rammed into a broken-down oil tanker and other articulated vehicles at Berger Bridge, inward Epe, along the Epe/Ibeju Lekki Road in Lagos State.

Following distress calls, operatives of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency were deployed to the scene. Upon arrival, they discovered that an oil tanker, with registration number MKA-232ZE and laden with Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), had earlier broken down on the carriageway due to an engine malfunction, partially obstructing traffic.

While repairs were ongoing, a tipper truck loaded with granite stones reportedly lost control and collided with the stationary tanker and another articulated truck conveying tyres. The registration numbers of the two trucks involved were yet to be ascertained at press time.

Preliminary investigations indicated that excessive speed by the tipper driver caused the crash. Although no deaths were recorded, the tipper driver and his assistant sustained serious injuries. They were treated by officials of the Lagos State Ambulance Service before being taken to Epe General Hospital for further medical attention.
