Group celebrates innovators, change-makers across continent

The Africa Trade Disruptors Award has honoured individuals across Africa whose innovations and business acumen are changing the economic narrative of the continent.

The event, which was also the maiden edition, marked the launch of the highly anticipated book, Africa Trade Disruptors, authored by the convener of the awards, Mr. Ayobanna Ikeanumba.

Speaking to journalists at the event in Onikan, Lagos, Ikeanumba shared the inspiration behind the book, stating, “The book is about recognising Africa’s best in business and innovation. It highlights individuals from Ghana, Tanzania, Kenya, Cameroon, and Nigeria, success stories of people who have brought ideas from their unique backgrounds and transformed conventional business strategies within their economies.”

He emphasised the central message of the book: determination and focus in the face of challenges eventually lead to recognition and global impact.

“These individuals started somewhere, faced challenges, but their perseverance brought them success. The book encourages everyone to remain steadfast and committed to their unique pursuits, for one day, their efforts too can be celebrated,” Ikeanumba noted.

A publisher and initiator of campaigns against violence toward security personnel, Ambassador Oluwayomi Oluwapelumi, described the book as enlightening, educational, and a call to action for all business practitioners.

He said: “Reading about the trade disruptors encourages us to rethink our business approaches, rebrand ourselves, and tap into innovative ideas that can make us change-makers in our respective industries.”

The event also honoured distinguished personalities, including actor Laide Bakare, who received accolades for her contributions.

Speaking to journalists, she reflected on the significance of recognition, saying, “I feel honoured, and this serves as a reminder that hard work, perseverance, and dedication are rewarded. The book is fascinating, eye-opening, and a must-read for anyone seeking inspiration to excel in their endeavors.”

The coordinator of the event and Public Relations Officer of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Ambassador Cornelius Udofia, explained the selection process for the awards.

He said: “The public nominates and selects the Africa Trade Disruptors. Our team ensures that we identify individuals and organisations making significant contributions to their communities and economies. From Stella Okoli of Emzor Pharmaceuticals to Dangote Group, these disruptors provide essential products and services that positively impact society.”

Udofia further encouraged Nigerians to harness the nation’s abundant resources and remain determined. “Nigeria is blessed with natural resources and a favorable climate. With focus and dedication, we can all contribute meaningfully to our economy,” he said.
