Guardian journalists win big at Nigeria Media Nite Out Awards

The Guardian recorded two major wins at the 19th Nigeria Media Nite Out Awards (NMNA), where two of its journalists were announced as winners at the event held on Sunday at Airport Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos.

Political correspondent David Meshioye won Political Writer of the Year, while society and culture reporter Suliyat Tella won Society Writer of the Year. Their wins highlight The Guardian’s continued commitment to quality journalism and excellence in storytelling.

Meshioye, a seasoned political journalist, was honoured for his detailed and balanced reporting on governance, public policy, and political developments across the country. His work has helped readers understand national issues at a time when political conversations remain central to public life. Over the years, he has reported on elections, reforms, party activities, and policy discussions that shape Nigeria’s political space.

Tella, who joined The Guardian less than two years ago, has become known for her human-interest features, lifestyle reports, and stories that reflect the experiences of everyday people. Her work covers a wide range of social issues, community realities, and cultural expressions that shape life in Lagos and beyond. Her nomination and win recognise her growth, consistency, and the distinct voice she brings to the society desk. She has written stories on markets, culture, transport, city life, and social experiences that resonate with readers in Lagos and other parts of the country.

The Nigeria Media Nite Out Awards, now in its 19th year, is one of the few award platforms that celebrate Nigerian journalists across print, online, broadcast, and photo journalism. Since its first edition in 2006, the award has continued to recognise professionals whose work shows accuracy, depth, ethics, and public impact. The event has grown to become a major gathering for reporters, editors and media personalities from different newsrooms across Nigeria.

This year’s edition also saw several Guardian journalists nominated in different categories, showing the strength of the newsroom across beats. The Guardian Newspaper (print) and The Guardian Newspaper (online) were shortlisted for Newspaper of the Year, reflecting the organisation’s strong presence in both traditional and digital media. Other nominees from the newsroom represented areas such as sports, business, entertainment, and photojournalism.

Many journalists, editors and media professionals attended the event, which brought together different newsrooms from across the country.

The wins for Meshioye and Tella add to The Guardian’s record of developing strong voices in Nigerian journalism. Their recognition at NMNA highlights the work of reporters who tell stories with clarity, depth and attention to the issues that matter to readers.
