Rivers police officer killed by colleague in Port Harcourt shooting

The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the death of a police officer, Inspector Ibrahim Sani, following a tragic shooting incident involving a fellow officer in Port Harcourt.

The incident occurred on Sunday, January 18, 2026, at about 1:20 p.m. at Next Cash and Carry Supermart in the Trans-Amadi area of the state capital.

Inspector Sani, attached to 14 Police Mobile Force (PMF), Yola, was on joint guard duty with military personnel alongside another officer, Inspector Daniel Dauda, when the shooting took place.

According to a press release issued by the Command’s Spokesperson, CSP Grace Iringe-Koko, the suspect, Inspector Victor Okus, attached to 17 PMF but on special duty at Intels, Onne, allegedly opened fire on his colleagues, shooting them in the head and neck regions.

The Unit Commander of 14 PMF, DSP Turaki Hassan, who provided an account of the incident, said the injured officers were immediately rushed to Nopsam Hospital for urgent medical attention.
While Inspector Dauda is currently responding to treatment, Inspector Ibrahim Sani was pronounced dead by medical personnel.

The remains of the deceased officer have been deposited at the Military Hospital Mortuary in Port Harcourt for preservation and autopsy.

Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, described the shooting as a grievous and reprehensible act.

He ordered a comprehensive and transparent investigation to uncover the circumstances that led to the incident.
Iringe-Koko said the suspect, Inspector Okus, has been arrested and is presently in police custody, confirming that he will be subjected to an Orderly Room Trial and subsequently charged to court for prosecution.

CP Adepoju also used the opportunity to caution officers on the handling of firearms, stressing that the use of weapons while on duty is a serious responsibility that requires utmost discipline and emotional control to avoid avoidable tragedies.

“The safety of officers and members of the public must always be prioritised,” the Commissioner warned.
The Command, however, extended its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the late Inspector Ibrahim Sani, while reaffirming its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and justice within the Force.

The Command assured the public that further updates will be provided as investigations continue.
