In a significant step towards strengthening regional cricket, the Lagos Cricket Club will begin an international tour of Accra, Ghana, tomorrow, the club has said.
The club said that the move highlights its commitment to developing cricket beyond Nigeria’s borders, adding that during the tour, which will end on April 10, it would play friendly matches in Accra, which are designed not only as a competitive exercise, but alsoas a platform for fostering sporting relationships between Nigeria and Ghana.
According to the club, a squad of talented players, comprising former and current national team players, will leave Lagos today with high expectations, aiming to test their skills against Ghanaian opposition while promoting sportsmanship and cultural exchange.
“These matches were structured as friendly internationals, allowing both sides toexperiment tactically,” it said, adding: “the club will have a net practice on Friday, play a Ghanaian development side (T20 Fixture) on Saturday, before engaging Expatriates in a 30-over gameon Tuesday.
“0n Wednesday, we will play against Legends (Veterans), while a 30-overs game against a local side on Friday, April 30 will conclude the programme.”
The Tour Captain, TayoAtolegbe, explained that last year the Cricket Club of Lagos went on a similar tour to Kenya, which was their inaugural trip outside of Nigeria.
He added that the club’s dream is to emulate The Marylebone Cricket Club, which is a touring side and the oldest Cricket Club in the World.
Atolagbe, who is the South West representative on the Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF) board, stressed thatspreading cricket within and beyond Nigeria has remained a core objective since the clubwas founded in 2024, with the previous visit to Kenya last year yielding competitive and successful outings.
The Lagos Cricket Club is mainly atouring side comprising members from theUnited Kingdom, the United States and Canada, among others.
