Former Edo permanent secretary, Ekhaguere, dies

Former Permanent Secretary in the Ministries of Health, Agriculture and Natural Resources in Edo State, Dr Felix Ekhaguere

A former Permanent Secretary in the Ministries of Health, Agriculture and Natural Resources in Edo State, Dr Felix Ekhaguere, has died at the age of 84.

According to a statement issued on behalf of the family and signed by his son, Osaretin, Ekhaguere passed away in Benin on Monday, June 1, 2026, after a brief illness.

The family described the late Ekhaguere as an extraordinary man whose life was defined by grace, perseverance, excellence and an unwavering commitment to the healing of others.

Ekhaguere was born on October 26, 1941, in Utoka village, Ovia North East Local Council of Edo State, to Mr Morgan Ekhaguere of the Asabor family of Ezoti, Ogbe quarters, and Mrs Grace Ehiarinmwian Ekhaguere (née Imadiyi), both of blessed memory.

As a public servant, Ekhaguere served Nigeria with distinction over four decades of professional practice. He was appointed Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at the Central Hospital Benin, where he rose through the ranks to become Senior Consultant and later Chief Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist. In 1984, he was appointed Medical Director of the hospital.
