Panic erupted in Lassa, Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State on Monday after suspected gunmen stormed Government Day Secondary School and abducted an unspecified number of students while they were sitting for the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) conducted by the National Examinations Council (NECO).
The attackers reportedly invaded the school in the morning, disrupting the examination and whisking away several candidates. A teacher was said to have been killed during the assault, while another sustained injuries.
The Borno State Police Command confirmed the incident, saying efforts were ongoing to determine the number of students taken, as some candidates remained unaccounted for.
The latest attack has heightened concerns over the safety of schools in parts of the North-East despite ongoing efforts by security agencies to protect educational institutions from armed groups.
Security operatives have since launched efforts to locate the missing students and restore calm in the affected community.
