‘How environments, thoughtful designs influence human behaviour’

Chioma Tyra Obiadi

Thoughtfully designed spaces have the power to create comfort, joy, connection and improve physical and emotional well-being.

When people walk into a room and feel comfortable without necessarily knowing why, that is usually the result of thoughtful design.

Thus, interior and exterior design isn’t simply about decorating spaces – it’s about improving the way people experience living and the world.

Those were the words of Chioma Tyra Obiadi, an Interior Design Expert and former Miss Nigeria who spoke on the physical and mental effect of thoughtfully designed exterior and interior spaces during an interview recently. She said: “A walk into a hotel, restaurant, or even someone’s home and you’d instinctively notice how the space made you feel. Some spaces immediately make you feel comfortable, inspired, and welcomed, while others don’t.”

Obiadi who has a Master of Fine Arts in Interior Design from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) United States, revealed that even as a beauty queen she had always been fascinated by design and this is why one of the most meaningful aspects of her reign as the 40th Miss Nigeria was the Green Girl Project, an environmental sustainability initiative that focused on supporting communities affected by environmental pollution.

She said: “Through the project, I collaborated with corporate partners, including companies within Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, to raise support for affected communities.

“Beyond raising awareness, we educated women and children on the environmental and health impacts of pollution while empowering them with knowledge and practical ways to improve their quality of life. Seeing the direct impact of that work remains one of the most fulfilling experiences of my journey.”

The Science behind Designs
Creativity is a scratch on the surface of thoughtful and successful design. According to Obiadi, successful design is supported by psychology, human behaviour, accessibility, sustainability, building codes, ergonomics, and evidence-based research.

Design Functionality
While beautiful interior spaces thick the aesthetics of design, beauty should never come at the expense of functionality – Obiadi remarked. “A successful space should support the people using it. It should make life easier, healthier, more comfortable, and more meaningful. If a space photographs beautifully but doesn’t improve someone’s experience, then I don’t think it has fully achieved its purpose.”

What A Great Interior Design should be
It is intentional – the space simply works. A great design isn’t just about creating beautiful spaces. It’s about creating spaces where people can live better, work better, heal better, and connect more deeply with one another.
.The lighting feels right.
.The circulation makes sense.
.The furniture supports how people actually live.
.The materials are appropriate.

Inspiring Design spaces
Hospitality design creates experiences that people remember long after they’ve left. However, Residential Designs are endearing because home is such a personal place.

Research in Designs
According to Obiadi, research is the most important part of the design process. “Every client is different, every project is different, and every space tells its own story. Before making design decisions, I want to understand how people live, work, move, interact, and what challenges they’re trying to solve. That information allows me to create spaces that aren’t just visually appealing but genuinely improve everyday life.”

Choosing and Studying Design As Career
It is a combination of creativity, problem-solving and improving people’s everyday lives. Obiadi stated. “I believe practical experience is incredibly important, but I also believe education provides a level of understanding that experience alone can’t always offer. It’s not just about knowing what looks beautiful but understanding why certain design decisions work, how environments influence human behaviour, and how thoughtful design can improve people’s physical and emotional well-being. Graduate school gave me that depth of knowledge and taught me to approach every project with research, intention, and purpose.”
