Football fans in Nigeria are divided over the reported transfer of Super Eagles striker Akor Adams from Sevilla to Venezia, with some calling it a ‘bad’ move.
In an X post on Friday night, Italian journalist and transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano, confirmed that Venezia have agreed a €16m deal with Sevilla for Adams, who has accepted personal terms and is set to join the newly promoted Serie A side.
Adams joined Sevilla for around €5m in January 2025 and scored 10 goals in 36 appearances, making this a profitable sale for Sevilla while giving Venezia a key attacking reinforcement.
The transfer has, however, drawn mixed reactions from fans, with some Nigerian supporters seeing it as a step down from the La Liga, while others view it as an opportunity for the 26-year-old to shine in Italy.
Reacting on X, Mave wondered, saying: “Why is he downgrading instead of upgrading? From Sevilla to Venezia. Nigeria players have very weird agents. Victor Osimhen went from Napoli to Galatasaray. Ademola Lookman was about to go to Fenerbahçe from Atalanta if not for Atletico Madrid that hijacked the deal last minute. Our players don’t have ambition.”
Adewunmi Temitope said he totally understands Osimhen’s case and Lookman didn’t immediately accept the Fenerbahçe offer though more lucrative, he also had issues.
Reacting to Adams’ move from Sevilla to Venezia, Temitope said: “This one is the typical African ‘get the bag’ mindset. No long term thinking! I suspect the club sponsors had something to do with the deal!”
According to Chukwuemeka, “This is like chasing the money and taking some steps backwards. Moving from Sevilla to Venezia is downgrade.”
Vaddon jumped to Adams’ defence, saying: “It is not easy ooo, they have to make and gather enough money for themselves and their entire family because it is not all of them that may finish their careers at the highest level.”
Kelvin countered, saying: “If it is about money, then they are not serious and this is why they do not move higher.”
Victor Smart pointed out that: “Football is a job to them, so they need to make as much money as they can even if it is playing for passion, that is how Africa is for you.”
Big Gunner said: “Even if Akor Adams wants to chase money, it is better he goes to Saudi Arabia. How much does Venezia want to pay him? Nigerian players with ‘stupid’ moves.”
Isika William argued, saying: “It’s not easy Chief. No big club came for him. Sevilla might not have been willing to give him another contract and told him they want to let him go.”
According to Just Crypto, “His performance at club was extremely poor so I know the club will sell him. Not downgrading but available market.”
Innoluv said: “When it gets to your turn, have ambition. You live in Nigeria and you expect ambition to come before funds knowing the situation of things??”
Not mincing words, Victor Embaga said: “Moving from Sevilla to Venezia is a downgrade. But football isn’t always about the bigger badge. Akor Adams has likely seen a project, guaranteed playing time, or a pathway that others don’t. Time will tell if it’s the right move.”
