The Cross River State chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Rt Hon Christopher Etta, has urged journalists in the state to uphold objectivity and truth in their reportage, emphasizing that a vibrant and independent press is crucial for Nigeria’s democracy to thrive.

The party chairman who made the appeal in an interactive meeting with journalists in Calabar , said that journalists have a unique responsibility to tell the the state’s story with truth, depth, and fairness, as well as amplify the voices, concerns, and hopes of the people to the national stage

The chairman who also commended journalists in the state for their professionalism and commitment to reporting activities of the state government, stated the party’s readiness to regularly engage the media on critical issues concerning the party and the state as the need arises.

Emphasising the crucial role the media play in shaping public perception and strengthening Nigeria’s democracy especially in a democratic dispensation, he advised the journalists to always be guided by objectivity and responsible reportage.

Etta however frowned at what he described as a shake down by some electronic media reporters in the state, urging them to change the approach and instead engage the party and government in meaningful discussions to ensure the much desired development.

He encouraged journalists to report not only the state’s challenges but also its progress and opportunities, adding that
balanced journalism should reflect both areas requiring improvement and efforts being made to address them

Etta also commended the visionary leadership of the state governor, Senator Bassey Otu, whose leadership style he said has redefined the meaning of governance, demonstrated through transparency, innovation, compassion, and unwavering commitment to the welfare of Cross River people.

He said as a media loving governor, Governor Otu has appointed journalists into sensitive positions in his government and urged members of the union to reciprocate the gesture by upholding the principles of accuracy, fairness and professionalism in their reporting.
