A fire outbreak in the early hours of Tuesday destroyed 17 containerised lock-up shops at Sabo Market in Ikorodu, Lagos, but the swift intervention of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service prevented the blaze from spreading to other shops and nearby properties.

According to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, a distress call was received at 12:42 a.m., prompting an immediate response. Firefighters from the Ikorodu and Ijede Fire Stations arrived at the scene by 12:54 a.m. and found the fire had engulfed 17 shops in a row of about 30 containerised lock-up shops.

The affected section of the market occupies a parcel of land measuring about 648 square metres within a larger market area covering approximately 1,944 square metres.

The Controller of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, said the combined efforts of firefighters from the two stations brought the situation under control, successfully containing and extinguishing the blaze before it could spread to adjoining shops and other structures.

She confirmed that no lives were lost and no injuries were recorded. “The fire was successfully contained and completely extinguished, preventing further spread to adjoining shops and properties,” Adeseye said.

She added that an investigation had commenced to determine the cause of the fire.

The latest incident is one of several market fires recorded across Lagos in recent months, highlighting the need for stricter adherence to fire safety regulations and improved preventive measures in markets across the state.
