Three people were rescued after a multiple-vehicle collision caused by a suspected brake failure on a MACK flatbed truck along the LASU–Isheri Road at Iyana School, inward Igando, Lagos, on Tuesday.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) said its officials swiftly responded to the accident, rescued trapped victims and restored the free flow of traffic on the busy corridor.

According to LASTMA, preliminary investigations showed that the truck suffered a brake failure, causing the driver to lose control before crashing into a Toyota Sienna and two commercial tricycles.

Officials of the traffic agency, who were on routine patrol in the area, immediately activated emergency response procedures, rescued the victims and took steps to prevent further crashes while managing traffic around the accident scene.

LASTMA said it worked with officers of the Iba Police Division to evacuate the damaged vehicles and clear the road, helping to restore normal vehicular movement.

Three occupants—one man and two women—sustained varying degrees of severe fractures in the crash. They were rescued from the wreckage by emergency responders and taken to El-Shaddai Hospital for treatment.

The vehicles involved were a MACK flatbed truck, a Toyota with registration number FGC 80 XE and a TVS commercial tricycle with registration number LSR 604 QP.

The agency said its traffic officers remained at the scene throughout the operation to regulate traffic, ensure the safety of commuters and facilitate the successful evacuation of the affected vehicles.

LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, commended the agency’s personnel for their professionalism and prompt response to the emergency.

He urged motorists, particularly operators of articulated and heavy-duty vehicles, to carry out thorough mechanical inspections before embarking on journeys, with special attention to their braking systems.

According to him, regular preventive maintenance of critical vehicle components is essential to reducing avoidable road crashes and improving road safety across Lagos State.

Bakare-Oki also advised motorists to obey traffic regulations and report road emergencies through LASTMA’s toll-free emergency short code, 3367, to enable quick response by the agency.
