The Ondo State Police Command has arrested four officers captured in a viral video allegedly making unprofessional and ethnically insensitive remarks to a member of the public during a stop-and-search operation.

 

The incident, which occurred along the Lagos-Benin Expressway, had sparked public outrage, with the development prompting an investigation.

 

While confirming the incident on Friday in Akure, the state capital, the police spokesperson in the state told newsmen that the officers had been identified and taken into custody following viral circulation of the video on social media platforms.

 

The officers were identified as AP/No. 207454, ASP Elomore Sodayo; AP/No. 332012, Inspector Adefila Adewale; AP/No. 332449, Inspector Olorunfemi Opeyemi; and AP/No. 332369, Inspector Odusola Peter.

 

Jimoh disclosed that the suspects are currently being held at the state command headquarters pending the outcome of disciplinary proceedings.

 

According to the PPRO, the Commissioner of Police, Felix Ohagwu, ordered an investigation into the incident to establish the circumstances surrounding the officers’ conduct and determine their level of culpability.

 

Jimoh emphasized that the Nigeria Police Force remained a disciplined and professional institution that would not condone any form of misconduct, incivility, or actions capable of undermining public confidence in the force.

 

“The Nigeria Police Force is a disciplined and professional institution that does not condone any form of misconduct, incivility, or actions capable of undermining public confidence, promoting ethnic division, or bringing the Force into disrepute,” Jimoh said.

 

He stressed that officers were expected to maintain the highest standards of professionalism in the discharge of their duties.

 

Jimoh stressed that police officers must, at all times, respect human dignity and operate in strict compliance with the Code of Conduct and Standard Operating Procedures of the Nigeria Police Force.

 

He assured members of the public that the investigation would be guided by the principles of fairness, transparency, and accountability, adding that the outcome would determine the next line of action.

 

The PPRO further appealed to citizens to remain calm and allow the disciplinary process to run its full course without interference.
