From humble beginnings in Idah, Kogi State, to the highest echelons of Nigeria’s legal profession, Dr. Ogwu James Onoja, SAN, FCArb, embodies a story of dedication, intellect, and service. A Senior Advocate of Nigeria and Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, Dr. Onoja has spent over 30 years championing justice and the rule of law.

Dr. Onoja, SAN, commenced his legal career with the firm of Humphrey Abah & Co., Legal Practitioners, Lagos, from 1992 to 1994. Between 1994 and 1996, he was in private practice as Principal Solicitor at Onoja Consulting Solicitors. He thereafter proceeded to the University of Lagos for his Master of Laws [LL.M.] degree from 1996 to 1997. From 1997 to 2000, he served as Senior Counsel with Messrs T.J. Onomigbo Okpoko, SAN & Co.

In 2000, he established O.J. Onoja & Associates [incorporating Onoja Consulting Solicitors]. As Principal Solicitor, he has represented individuals and corporate organizations across Nigeria at all levels of courts of record, before arbitral tribunals, and in out-of-court negotiations.

What does Leadership mean to you?

Leadership, to me, represents the ultimate expression of responsibility and accountability. A true leader must lead by example, maintaining an impeccable standard of excellence in all endeavours. It requires a balanced approach—combining approachable, compassionate interaction with grace and equity when managing subordinates. Ultimately, it demands a deeply empathetic and charismatic presence that inspires and uplifts the organization.
How do you embody those qualities in your daily life?

Within my firm, I strive to lead by example by actively immersing myself in our core legal operations and institutional activities. I am highly proactive in addressing and correcting staff misconduct to preserve our professional standards. Furthermore, I prioritize staff welfare and empathy, ensuring that hard work is justly rewarded through competitive remuneration, robust benefits, and a deeply supportive working environment. Every staff can aspire to the highest rank of the Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).

How do you demonstrate these qualities in your own leadership style?
I manifest visionary leadership by continuously steering my organization toward sustainable growth and long-term institutional viability year after year. My commitment to empathy is tangibly reflected in our comprehensive staff welfare packages. We provide highly competitive salaries, robust pension schemes, operational vehicles, residential accommodation, serene office environment and dedicated staff buses to facilitate the seamless movement of our lawyers. As a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), what are your thoughts on the current state of the SAN appointment process in Nigeria?
Having the privilege of serving for four (4) years as a member of the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC)—the body constitutionally vested with the authority to appoint and discipline Senior Advocates of Nigeria— I am highly satisfied with the rigour of the current selection process. We have progressively amended the guidelines to elevate the threshold of excellence required for Silk. The process remains exceptionally rigorous, transparent, and merit-driven, meticulously designed to reward hard work, unimpeachable integrity, and professional honour at the Bar.

Do you believe the selections accurately reflect the quality and caliber of the lawyers being recognized?
While no human institution is entirely infallible, the regulatory framework governing the conferment of the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria is exceptionally superior and robust. It is my firm conviction that these stringent rules are applied with the utmost diligence and impartiality, ensuring that the final selections accurately reflect the outstanding quality, caliber, and professional distinction of the legal practitioners being elevated.

What is your assessment of the Nigerian legal system’s evolution and development since the country’s transition to democracy?
The judiciary remains a vital pillar of our democracy. It has performed creditably well as an independent arm of government, particularly when viewed against the backdrop of Nigeria’s highly dynamic and often unpredictable socio-political landscape. Over the years, it has consistently provided a robust platform for citizens to seek redress, actively safeguarded the rule of law, and served as an essential check on executive and legislative powers, thereby driving the steady evolution of our jurisprudence.

What guidance would you offer to aspiring leaders who are just starting their careers using the legal sectors as a yardstick?
My fundamental counsel to young legal practitioners, and indeed the youth at large, is to embrace the culture of unremitting industry. There are simply no shortcuts to enduring prosperity or professional distinction. Success requires an unwavering focus and the consistency to constantly realign oneself with the principles of hard work, unimpeachable integrity, and exemplary character. Furthermore, aspiring leaders must consciously distance themselves from illicit substances, crime, and any conduct capable of compromising their professional or moral standing.

How do you balance your official responsibilities, family, and social engagement?
To me, family is the ultimate bedrock. My professional exertions are driven by a desire to adequately provide for their needs and to earn the continued affection and commendation of my wife and children. It brings me immense joy to fulfill my professional obligations and return home early to my family. When I participate in social engagements, I do so predominantly in the company of my wife. My approach to balance is deliberate: I dedicate official working hours exclusively to the demands of my office, and unconditionally reserve the remainder of my time for my family, a practice made seamless by the profound understanding and support of my wife and household.

What advice will you give to others striving for a similar balance?
For anyone striving to achieve this equilibrium, you must accept that while absolute perfection is elusive, remaining anchored in your core values is non-negotiable. First, establish clear boundaries by dedicating your utmost effort to professional duties during office hours, but preserve the rest of your time unconditionally for your home. Second, treat family not as an afterthought, but as your primary anchor; returning to them early builds a foundational peace that fuels your career. Lastly, open communication with an understanding partner is indispensable. By blending professional integrity and the fear of God with a deliberate commitment to your loved ones, you can navigate the most demanding career paths without losing what matters most.
