Importance of Leadership
To me, Leadership is not a fixed or singular concept; like the proverbial elephant described differently by different blind men, it may be viewed from various perspectives as several scholars have described Leadership. The likes of Warren Bennis who described leadership to be “… the capacity to translate vision into reality.” So also John C. Maxwell described leadership as the ability to know the way, go the way and show the way. Despite all these, it means that “Leadership is action, not position.” in the words of Donald H. McGannon.
Leadership is therefore the capacity to translate vision into reality, to know the way, go the way, and show the way, and ultimately, to act rather than merely hold office.
Overtime, I have tried to embody the necessary qualities of leadership in my daily life by intentionally leading by example, maintaining high professional standards, and fostering excellence among myself, younger colleagues, and members of staff. I must also mention that leadership is a continuous process that requires discipline, selflessness, accountability, integrity, consistency, and the willingness to make strategic decisions for the greater good and result. Accordingly, I strive each day to grow in humility, strengthen my values, and contribute meaningfully to the development of others especially the younger colleagues of this noble profession.
Rickey Tarfa & Co. Core Values
Rickey Tarfa & Co., a law firm which been in existence since the 1987 is an embodiment of professional excellence, dedication to quality legal service, integrity, trust, respect and upholding the rule of law and service to both paying and pro bono clients. The firm also emphasizes training and development of young lawyers, with a non-discriminatory, people-centered approach.
These values shape the firm’s decision-making processes from employment of staff which does not encourage discrimination, to the professional approach to clients’ briefs, amongst others by providing a principled framework within which choices are made. The staff are trained to ensure that decision making aligns strictly with the firm’s commitment to excellence, professionalism, integrity, client service, and the development of younger colleagues of the profession. As a result, the organisation is able to make decisions that are not only effective, but also consistent with its identity, reputation, and long-term vision which frowns against discrimination and any conduct incompatible to that of a legal practitioner.
On a whole, the way and manner in which we advise our clients, manage our professional responsibilities, mentor younger learned colleagues, and conduct ourselves both within and outside the courtroom, amongst others are entirely guided by these values.
Qualities Essential for A Successful Leader
John C. Maxwell described a leader as one who “knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.”
It is therefore clear that a leader is someone with a vision, and not just a vision, but a defined path to its achievement. A true leader is ready to lead the way, to walk that path and selflessly guide others along it.
To embody this, a successful leader must possess vision, integrity, courage, discipline, resilience, empathy, and the ability to develop others. While the list is endless, it is also critical that a good leader demonstrates sound judgment, emotional intelligence, and a willingness to take responsibility.
In my leadership approach, I strive to uphold high standards, promote teamwork, and delegate effectively. I create opportunities for younger colleagues to learn and grow, and I prioritize being accessible, fair, and committed to nurturing the next generation of leaders. I believe leadership is measured not only by personal achievement, but by the growth and success of those we lead. Accordingly, I consistently seek to motivate, guide, and support the people under my supervision — including mentees and staff — so that they can become the best versions of themselves and achieve meaningful growth in their chosen fields.
Thoughts On the Current State of The SAN Appointment Process In Nigeria
The rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria remains one of the highest and most prestigious ranks within the legal profession and continues to symbolize excellence in advocacy and legal scholarship. Over the years, the process has evolved and has become increasingly rigorous and meticulous, with greater emphasis on professional competence, integrity, advocacy skills, and positive contribution to the development of the law. The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee has tirelessly continued to introduce reforms aimed at improving transparency and maintaining the prestige associated with the appointment to the prestigious rank.
In my respectful view, no institution administered by human beings is entirely beyond criticism, given the inherent limitations of human judgment. That said, this does not diminish the highly commendable efforts of the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee in carrying out its responsibilities. The committee has demonstrated a clear commitment to excellence in the elevation of legal practitioners to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria. While many of the selections appear to reflect the calibre and quality of the lawyers recognised within the profession, it remains important that the process is continually upheld as transparent, objective, and merit-based.
Assessment of the Nigerian Legal System’s Evolution and Development
In my assessment, the Nigerian legal system has recorded significant evolution since the return to democracy, particularly in the areas of constitutional development, judicial activism, and the reiteration of the rule of law. There have been clear important reforms in the judicial administration, alternative dispute resolution has been introduced and encouraged, commercial law is been broadened, and introduction of technology-driven legal processes is at the fore of every aspect of modern day practice. However, while the progress achieved is notable, much remains to be done to ensure that the justice system fully meets the demands of a growing democratic society as the law in itself is never static, it grows with the society.
The legal profession and the judiciary must continue to embrace reform, innovation, and institutional strengthening to ensure that the justice system remains effective, accessible, and responsive to the needs of society.
Guidance For Aspiring Leaders in The Legal Sector
Aspiring leaders in the legal sector must intentionally build a strong foundation of legal competence, professional discipline, and integrity. These qualities are not acquired by chance, but through continuous learning and deliberate effort. They must also recognize that leadership is rooted in service to humanity and society at large. It is therefore essential to cultivate humility, sound judgment, effective communication, teamwork, and a client-centred mindset, while remaining committed to self-improvement in this noble profession.
In law, reputation is one of the most valuable assets a lawyer can possess, and it must be carefully protected.Aspiring leaders should further embrace discipline, remain resilient in the face of challenges, and approach every assignment, however small, with diligence and professionalism.
Leadership opportunities will naturally follow consistent demonstrations of competence, reliability, and integrity. Ultimately, an aspiring leader must commit to continuous personal development, to the point of becoming a role model for the next generation. Growth is continuous. It never stops.
Balancing Official Responsibilities, Family, And Social Engagements
I balance my official responsibilities, family and social engagements by being intentional, discipline in placing priorities when I have conflicts in the different aspects earlier mentioned. I approach my responsibilities as a matter of necessity beyond a matter of ‘want’. It is also pertinent to note that all of these are important to mankind but an intentional and disciplined approach makes you know when to approach such, how to pull it through, what should take priority and what can wait for later.
My advice to others striving for balance is to be intentional, disciplined in their decision making when such conflict arises and proffer an alternative means of solution if possible. You should know that you can’t be everywhere at the same time but you can be ‘felt’ everywhere at the same time. A balanced life contributes significantly to long-term effectiveness, happiness, and fulfillment.
