The Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy, through its capstone initiative, tagged “PeePoo to Power Lagos,” has intensified advocacy for improved public sanitation and environmental sustainability with a 10-kilometre awareness walk from Allen Avenue, Ikeja, to Ojota Park.

The exercise, conceived and executed by Team Weepoo, was designed to promote cleaner communities, discourage open defecation and demonstrate how human waste can be converted into renewable energy.

Participants during the walk included the Team Lead, Team Weepoo, Bayode Oke-Thomas; the Executive Secretary of the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy, Aisha Okunade; the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Climate Change and Circular Economy, Titilayo Oshodi, as well as residents and other stakeholders.

With placards bearing inscriptions such as “Health is Wealth” and “From Waste to Watts, PeePoo to Power,” the participants terminated the walk at the LAMATA Bus Terminal, Ojota before proceeding to Ojota Park for the inauguration of a rehabilitated public toilet upgraded with biodigester technology capable of converting human waste into clean energy.

Speaking at the event, Oke-Thomas said the initiative was driven by the need to change public perception about human waste, stressing that it should no longer be viewed merely as refuse to be discarded but as a resource with economic value.

According to him, the project seeks to modernise public sanitation facilities, improve hygiene standards, discourage open defecation and provide cleaner, safer and more dignified public conveniences across Lagos.

He disclosed that the renovated Ojota Park facility integrates renewable energy through biodigester technology and would serve as a pilot project for similar interventions in other local councils.

On her part, Okunade described the initiative as evidence that young people can provide practical solutions to societal challenges without necessarily occupying political offices.

Also speaking, Oshodi stressed the need to deepen climate literacy by changing behavioural attitudes towards sanitation, hygiene and waste management.

She added that the “PeePoo to Power Lagos” initiative would be replicated across local councils to strengthen public awareness that human waste, when properly managed, can generate renewable energy.
