The Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA), Plateau State chapter, has expressed concern over what it described as the lack of visible preparations by the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) ahead of the October 2026 local government elections.

In a statement issued yesterday and signed by its State Chairman, Hon. Yusuf Sani Umar, the party called on PLASIEC to explain what it termed the Commission’s “silence and apparent inaction” as the expected election period draws nearer.

According to the DLA, political parties, stakeholders and the electorate have yet to receive any information regarding the electoral timetable or other critical preparations for the conduct of the polls.

“The Party calls on PLASIEC to immediately explain to the people of Plateau State the reasons behind its silence and apparent inaction. With the expected election period drawing closer, the Commission has left political parties, stakeholders and the general public in the dark regarding the electoral timetable and other necessary preparations,” the statement read.

The party said it had expected a more proactive and transparent approach from the electoral body, particularly in view of the professional record of its chairman during his service with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The DLA urged PLASIEC to uphold the rule of law by ensuring compliance with constitutional provisions governing local government administration and conducting elections in line with the expiration of the two-year tenure of elected local government councils.

The party also criticised the leadership of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Plateau State chapter, alleging that its actions appeared to support moves aimed at extending the tenure of elected council officials.

“Any attempt to extend the tenure of elected Local Government officials outside the law is unacceptable and contrary to democratic principles,” it stated.

The DLA further called on the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Plateau State chapter, to resist any anti-democratic actions capable of weakening democratic institutions and urged the council to revive its proposed assessment of the performance of the Plateau State Government and local government chairmen.

The party reaffirmed its commitment to defending democracy, the rule of law and constitutional governance, while calling on relevant stakeholders to ensure that the forthcoming local government elections are conducted in accordance with the Constitution and Nigeria’s electoral laws.
