The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in the just-concluded Osun State governorship election, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, has backed the party’s decision to review the outcome of the poll, while raising concerns over alleged attacks on APC members and supporters across the state.
Oyebamiji, in a statement to his supporters, said he had hoped for a different outcome but would respect the position of the electoral umpire pending the conclusion of the party’s review.
He said, “Although, we had hoped for a different outcome in the election, in the meantime, we respect the position of the electoral umpire and I totally support the decision of our party in its ongoing review of the outcome of the election.”
The former commissioner expressed appreciation to voters who supported his candidacy, describing their confidence in his campaign as a source of gratitude.
“I appreciate the many people who believed in and supported the alternative vision we articulated. I am deeply grateful to every voter who placed his or her trust in our vision,” he said.
He also commended APC leaders, members and campaign volunteers for their contributions throughout the electioneering period.
“To the volunteers who gave their time and energy, and to our committed party members and leaders across the state who turned out to energize our campaign, I appreciate you all,” Oyebamiji stated.
According to him, while the campaign and election had ended, the principles and aspirations promoted during the campaign remained relevant to the development of Osun State.
“However, the campaign has come to an end and the election is over, but the values and causes we championed are alive,” he said.
Oyebamiji urged his supporters to remain committed to the state, stressing that their contribution to Osun’s development should continue beyond the electoral contest.
“We would continue to work for effective, inclusive and rapid development of our dear Osun,” he added.
He further called on APC members and supporters to remain engaged and vigilant while continuing to contribute to their communities.
“I urge all of you who stood by our party and campaign to keep working for our community, to stay engaged, to continue to organize and to remain vigilant for the collective good of our state,” he said.
However, the APC candidate expressed concern over alleged acts of hostility and violence against members and supporters of the party following the election.
He called on the Osun State Government and security agencies to intervene, alleging that the attacks had intensified in the aftermath of the poll.
“At the same time, I wish to alert the State Government and security agents to the growing trend of hostility and violence against our members and supporters,” Oyebamiji said.
He added, “The violent attacks on our members witnessed in the build-up to the election has taken another dimension in the last 24 hours.”
Oyebamiji consequently urged the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to act swiftly to prevent further violence and protect residents across the state.
“Consequently, I urge the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to intervene and arrest this ugly trend without delay,” he stated.
Despite the allegations, he appealed to APC supporters to remain calm, peaceful and law-abiding while the party undertakes its review of the election outcome.
“Once again, I thank every voter, supporter, party member and leader for your unwavering commitment, sacrifice, and support,” he said.
Oyebamiji also expressed satisfaction with the campaign mounted by his team, saying, “I remain proud of the campaign we ran and grateful for the confidence you reposed in me.”
He reaffirmed his commitment to the state and extending goodwill to the people of Osun and Nigeria.
