President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has described the life of a pro-democracy icon, Ayo Opadokun, as one defined by sacrifice, courage, and patriotism, saying that his relentless struggle for the enthronement of democracy stands as a testament to his character and conviction.

Tinubu stated this yesterday in a tribute to commemorate Opadokun’s 80th birthday at Ikate Baptist Church, Surulere, Lagos State, recalling that the veteran activist marked his 50th birthday in detention, where anti-democratic forces had confined him over his agitation for democracy.

In his tribute, former Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd), described Opadokun as an accomplished legal practitioner, journalist, elder statesman, and civil and political activist whose contributions to Nigeria’s democratic evolution have earned him a respected place in national history.

Former Ogun State Governor, Gbenga Daniel, described Opadokun’s remarkable milestone as a celebration of a life devoted to truth, justice, courage, and selfless service.

Also, former Ogun State Governor, Olusegun Osoba, declared that the democracy Nigeria enjoys today is a direct result of the fight waged by patriots like Ayo Opadokun.

Osoba affirmed that in the history of Nigeria’s democratic struggle, Opadokun’s name would be written in gold.

Meanwhile, Opadokun has said Nigeria must “turn a new leaf” and urgently address the challenges of poverty, corruption and poor governance if the country is to realise its potential.

He said his survival through years of activism, detention and deprivation was a demonstration of God’s grace.

Opadokun, however, said that Tinubu was attempting to dismantle some of the entrenched structures inherited from the military era, adding that the President had been part of the pro-democracy struggle.

He expressed optimism that the country could experience a positive turnaround if Nigerians collectively prioritised good governance, economic development and the fight against corruption.
