Two persons have been confirmed dead after a heap of refuse collapsed on a building at Ikot Effanga, along the Old Odukpani Road in Calabar, Cross River State.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, August 28, 2026, when the refuse reportedly gave way and impacted a building said to have been constructed within a valley.
The Cross River State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Friday by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah.
According to the command, its personnel responded to the scene after receiving information about the incident and discovered that the collapse had affected the building and trapped occupants.
The victims were identified as Nfon Imé, a male, while the identity of the female victim had yet to be established.
The police said the bodies of the victims had been recovered and deposited at a mortuary.
“The deceased, identified as Nfon Imé ‘m’, and a yet-to-be-identified female, believed to have been in the building at the time of the incident, have been recovered and deposited at the mortuary,” the statement said.
The command said it had commenced an assessment of the circumstances surrounding the collapse, while further investigation was ongoing.
It urged residents to remain calm and refrain from speculation as authorities work to establish the full circumstances that led to the incident.
The police added that further information would be released once details had been verified.
