The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Senator Ajibola Basiru, has met Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke to discuss efforts to secure support in the state for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.

Basiru said the meeting took place during a visit to Adeleke on Saturday, which he described as both a congratulatory visit and an opportunity to discuss the president’s re-election campaign.

The APC secretary said Adeleke had promised to work towards delivering Osun for Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.
The meeting comes less than three weeks after Adeleke won a second term as Osun governor in an election in which the APC was defeated.

Basiru said he visited the governor to congratulate him on his victory and to express appreciation for Adeleke’s attendance at the burial of his late mother.
“On a congratulatory visit to His Excellency, Ademola Nurudeen Jackson Adeleke, on his victory at the polls, and to specially appreciate him for his visit during the burial of my late mother, as well as to discuss how to deliver Osun for Mr. President, as promised by Governor Ademola Adeleke, in the 2027 Presidential Election,” Basiru said.

Adeleke, who contested the August 15 governorship election on the platform of the Accord Party, secured 511,067 votes, defeating the APC candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, who polled 444,815 votes. The result gave Adeleke victory in 19 of the state’s 30 local government areas, while Oyebamiji won 11.

The result was a setback for the APC, which had mounted a major campaign to unseat Adeleke. The party had constituted a 276-member national campaign council and 12 subcommittees ahead of the poll, with Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma appointed to chair the campaign council.

The APC has since faced questions over its performance in the election. Party chieftain Farouk Aliyu said internal disagreements, disputes over the choice of candidate and complacency contributed to the defeat, describing the outcome as a wake-up call ahead of the 2027 general election.

Adeleke’s position on Tinubu’s 2027 bid has also become a major feature of political discussions following the Osun election.
On August 16, a day after his re-election, Adeleke reaffirmed his support for Tinubu’s bid for a second term, describing the president as a “son of Osun State”.

However, Adeleke later rejected suggestions that his support was based on a political agreement with Tinubu.

In an interview reported on August 16, the governor said he had not reached any agreement with the president in exchange for his support, explaining that his backing was based on Tinubu being from the region.

The distinction is significant because Adeleke remains outside the APC. His re-election ticket was under the Accord Party after the Peoples Democratic Party did not field a candidate in the Osun governorship election.

Adeleke also visited Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on August 20, in his first reported meeting with the president after the Osun election. The governor said the visit was to thank Tinubu for his commitment to democracy and for what he described as the president’s role in ensuring a free and fair election.

The visit also followed earlier public statements by Adeleke supporting Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid. On August 4, the governor reiterated his support for the president while calling on Tinubu to intervene over political violence in Osun ahead of the governorship election.

Basiru, a former senator who has served as the APC’s national secretary, was also among the party’s leading figures involved in its Osun campaign. He had earlier described the 2026 governorship election as critical to the party’s prospects in the state ahead of the wider electoral cycle.
