As the world celebrated the International Grandparents’ Day (IGD) yesterday, the Christian Centre for Mission, Family and Leadership Development (CEMFLED) has called on the federal government to provide free medical care, shelter and stronger protection for elderly Nigerians.

CEMFLED made the call yesterday during a rally to commemorate the inaugural IGD in Abuja, celebrate grandparents, and highlight their contributions to family development, cultural preservation, and the well-being of younger generations.

According to CEMFLED, the IGD initiative also seeks to strengthen inter-generational relationships and promote the dignity, well-being and inclusion of older persons.

The Executive Director of CEMFLED, Dr Isaac Komolafe, said grandparents had played significant roles in raising children, preserving family values, and contributing to the nation’s development.

Speaking on the theme, “Preserving Legacy, Strengthening Generations,” he stressed that their contributions should not be overlooked, adding that grandparents remain important custodians of family history, values and traditions.

Komolafe further urged Nigerians to accord the elderly greater respect and consideration in public places, including hospitals, banks, vehicles and commercial establishments.

He further urged the government to introduce policies requiring businesses and public institutions to give elderly people preferential treatment and, possibly, discounts on goods and services.
