Abia hosts Tertiary Education Sports Festival in November

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti

Organisers of the Abia State Tertiary Education Sports Fiesta, tagged ASTESF, have chosen November 3 to 6 as dates for the 2026 edition of the games, which will hold at the Umuahia Township Stadium.

The festival is expected to feature federal, state and private tertiary institutions in Abia State.

Chairman of the Fiesta Central Organising Committee (COC), who is also the Special Adviser to Governor Alex Otti on Tertiary Education, Dr Emeka Enyiazu, announced after the COC meeting that ASTESF 2026 is an important milestone in the development of tertiary institution sports in Abia State.

“The Fiesta is conceived as more than a sporting competition, but also a platform for talent discovery, youth development, institutional friendship and healthy competition, providing an avenue through which the enormous sporting potential of students at Abia’s tertiary institutions can be identified, nurtured and linked to greater opportunities,” he explained.

He said that the ASTESF 2026 is about bringing tertiary institutions in Abia State, including federal, state and privately-owned schools and their students, to share the same aspirations, energy and sporting potential through the unifying power of sport.

According to Dr Enyiazu, “while this fiesta provides a common platform to compete, build friendships and demonstrate what young people can achieve when talent meets opportunity, we want every participating institution to see ASTESF not merely as a competition to be won, but as an investment in the development of our young people.”

He said that the COC has been working to ensure a world-class competition, adding, “various sub-committees of the local organising structure are already being mobilised to address the technical, medical, media, mobilisation, marketing, logistics, security, protocol, welfare, ceremonies, and other critical aspects of the event to ensure that participating institutions receive adequate information and support to prepare their athletes and officials for the competition.

“ASTESF 2026 will provide an opportunity to move tertiary institution sports beyond competition and towards talent identification and development, because today’s student-athletes could become tomorrow’s elite sportsmen and women representing Abia and Nigeria at national and international competitions,” he said.
