The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) is seeking a strategic partnership with the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Lagos to deploy advanced technology and international best practices in traffic management across the state.

The initiative emerged during a high-level working visit by the LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, and senior management officials of the agency to the Chinese Consulate, where they held discussions with the Consul General, Her Excellency Yan Yuqing.

The engagement focused on the growing mobility challenges confronting Lagos and the need for technology-driven solutions to improve traffic flow, enforcement, surveillance, road safety and incident management in the megacity.

Bakare-Oki said the increasing vehicular population, expanding commercial activities and rising demand for mobility in Lagos required a more sophisticated traffic management system capable of responding effectively to the changing transportation landscape.

He said LASTMA was committed to strengthening its operations through the adoption of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), real-time traffic monitoring, smart surveillance, artificial intelligence, data-driven enforcement and automated incident detection.

According to him, collaboration with relevant Chinese institutions and stakeholders could provide LASTMA with access to international expertise, technological knowledge and innovative solutions that could be adapted to Lagos’ unique transportation environment.

The General Manager also stressed the importance of human capacity development, noting that technological investment must be supported by specialised training and knowledge transfer to enable personnel to effectively operate and manage modern traffic management systems.

Responding, Yan Yuqing welcomed the LASTMA delegation and acknowledged the importance of strengthening institutional and professional exchanges between Lagos State authorities and relevant counterparts and stakeholders in China, particularly in transportation, urban mobility and technological innovation.

The discussions covered intelligent transportation systems, traffic data management, road safety, technological capacity building, operational efficiency and innovative approaches to addressing urban mobility challenges.

Bakare-Oki reiterated LASTMA’s readiness to build strategic relationships with credible local and international institutions to improve traffic management and create safer and more orderly roads across Lagos.

The proposed collaboration is expected to broaden LASTMA’s international partnerships while supporting the agency’s transition towards a more technology-enabled and data-driven traffic management system.

Other senior management officials at the meeting included Mr. Akeem Adeosun, Mr. Jimmy Awoyemi, Mr. Jubril Oshodi, Ms. Folake Ayeni, Mrs. Afe Babalola, Mr. Akinpelu Ayuba, Mr. Mohammed Giwa and Mr. Adebayo Taofiq.
