The seemingly peaceful atmosphere after the August 15, 2026 gubernatorial polls in Osun State was shattered yesterday as gunmen reportedly killed one of the appointees of Governor Ademola Adeleke, identified as Olalekan Oyeyemi, popularly known as Emir Ajagungbade.

The Guardian gathered that Emir was brutally murdered around 10:00 a.m. during a gun duel which rocked motor parks in Mayfair, Sabo and Lagere areas of the ancient city of Ile-Ife.

One of the eyewitnesses said that the deceased, who led his loyalists, was gunned down during a botched attempt to take over control of the motor park in Mayfair before the violence occasioned by the deadly confrontation spread to other motor parks in Sabo and Lagere.

The eyewitness said that residents, shop owners and passersby near Mayfair Park, where the chaos erupted, fled the scene as gunshots continued for more than 20 minutes, causing tension in the area.

A viral video sighted by The Guardian showed Emir wearing a hooded cardigan drenched in blood, with his dead body dumped inside a vehicle.

Responding to the development, Adeleke ordered the state’s Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Zungura, to launch a thorough investigation into the killing and fish out Emir’s killers.

In a statement by his Spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, the governor, who bemoaned the leadership crisis within factions of transport unions in the state, ordered the immediate vacation of the motor parks by warring groups and the establishment of a Park Management System with immediate effect.

MEANWHILE, the Department of State Services (DSS) has alerted Muslim and Christian leaders in Osun State to an alleged
plan by terrorists to attack churches, mosques, markets and other public gathering centres in an attempt to frustrate the 2027 general elections.

The warning was issued during separate meetings the DSS held with leaders of the Muslim community and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Osogbo on September 9, 2026.

The religious leaders were advised to take preventive measures and strengthen security around places of worship, schools and other public gathering centres.

According to intelligence presented at the meetings, terrorists were allegedly planning to spread insecurity to Southern Nigeria, particularly the South-West, in a bid to create tension ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

President of the Osun State Muslim Community, Mustapha Olawuyi, described the security alert as genuine and urged religious leaders and residents to remain vigilant.

Olawuyi said the DSS also advised that vehicles should not be parked close to worshippers during Jumat prayers and other gatherings.

He added that nobody should be allowed to sleep inside mosques, while religious leaders were urged to pay closer attention to activities around places of worship.

Also, the Osun State CAN Chairman, John Adeleke, said Christian leaders were instructed to alert churches and school owners to strengthen their security awareness.

AGAINST the backdrop of reported planned attacks by terrorists on worship centres in Osun State, Governor Ademola Adeleke, yesterday, tasked residents of the state to be vigilant and remain alert over any suspicious movement in communities.

In a statement by his Spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, the governor emphasised the need for the citizenry to promptly inform security agencies of suspected individuals or strange faces that may be plotting to launch violent attacks on any part of the state.

Adeleke said that his administration would soon convene an emergency State Council Security meeting with heads of security agencies to brainstorm on the imminent threats.

The governor also directed the State Council of Traditional Rulers to meet with a view to rejigging the security architecture at the grassroots level.

The governor, while commending the DSS for taking proactive measures to counter the threats, charged other security agencies to review the situation and develop an action plan to strengthen security of lives and property.
