The Governing Council of World Football ruling body (FIFA), will be the one to decide on the planned Normalisation Committee to reform Nigeria football, a source close to the body has said.
Top officials of both the Confederations of African Football (CAF) and FIFA returned to their respective bases on Thursday after spending four days with various stakholders in Nigeria.
A source told The Guardian, on Friday, that the visit by CAF and FIFA was basically ‘a fact finding mission’ adding that they will submit their reports to FIFA governing council soon for final delibration on the steps to take in reforming the nation’s football.
“Basically, what those officials of CAF and FIFA came for was a fact finding mission in Nigeria. They are not the one to decide which steps to follow in process that will lead to the reform of football in Nigeria. Now that they have gotten what they came for, they will submit their report to the governing council of FIFA soon to decide on which way to go.
“One thing is certain. FIFA will not align with those clamouring for Interim body to reposition Nigeria football. Yes, Interim Committee worked for Nigeria in 2006, but we have a different sceniaro at hand because then in 2006, Fanny Amun, who was Secretary General of the NFF was a staff of the Sports Ministry, and when the Ibrahim Galadima-led NFF board was removed from office, the structure of Nigeria football was intact.
Then, both Fanny Amun and Chief Oyuki Obaseki who was then chairman of the league board and vice chairman of the NFF were on ground to run our football. It was easy for FIFA to deal with the NFF then. It was their Interim body that produced the Sanni Lulu board.
“But we have a different case at hand today because we don’t have a Secretary General in place now to lead the secretariat. If the former NFF Secretary General, Mohammed Sanusi had not resigned alongside the Ibrahim Gusau-led board, then, the ideal of having an Interim body could have come in. Now, we have Emmanuel Ikpeme as Acting Secretary of the NFF. He can’t lead the transition on Interim basis because FIFA won’t even recognise him. That is why Normalisation Committee is the only way out,” the source said.
