The Oyo State Government has faulted the Federal Government over the power supply situation in the country, saying the use of generators to power streetlights in the state was necessitated by unreliable electricity from the national grid.

The state government’s position was contained in a statement by the Special Adviser to Governor ‘Seyi Makinde on Media, Dr Sulaimon Olanrewaju, in response to criticism by the Sharafadeen Alli Campaign Organisation over the powering of streetlights in Oyo State.

Olanrewaju said the Makinde administration would not apologise for keeping the state illuminated and secure, arguing that the use of diesel-powered generators had become necessary because of inadequate regular electricity supply.

He challenged Senator Sharafadeen Alli, whose All Progressives Congress (APC) is the ruling party at the federal level, to direct his concerns over electricity supply to the Federal Government.

“The only reason generators are being used is because the APC-led Federal Government, Senator Sharafadeen Alli’s party, has failed spectacularly to deliver the regular electricity supply it promised Nigerians,” he said.

Olanrewaju added that if the national grid were reliable, there would be no need for diesel-powered generators to operate the streetlights.

He said the state government was also pursuing alternative energy sources, noting that it had built a 5MW solar plant which was being upgraded to 12MW.

According to him, the development demonstrates the administration’s commitment to sustainable and independent energy solutions.

The media aide also responded to the campaign organisation’s criticism of the renovation of the Lekan Salami Sports Complex, saying the project had enabled Ibadan to host international football fixtures.

He said the temporary pause in international matches involving Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) at the stadium was due to further upgrades being undertaken to meet evolving international standards.

Olanrewaju maintained that the administration remained focused on delivering infrastructure and other development projects rather than engaging in political exchanges.

He described the criticism from the Alli campaign organisation as an attempt to distort the government’s record, insisting that Oyo State would continue with its development agenda.

The statement also addressed the disagreement between Alli and Governor Makinde over the governor’s earlier description of the senator as a “jejune lawyer.”

Olanrewaju defended Makinde’s professional record as an engineer, noting that the governor had been honoured as a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers.

He said the administration would remain focused on what he described as “real development” and would not be distracted by political attacks.
