Chairman of the Advocacy for Nigeria Football Reform Initiative, Harrison Jalla, has carpeted the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for its “show of shame” at the just-concluded WAFU B women’s tournament hosted by Burkina Faso.

The WAFU B Tournament is a qualifying competition for the CAF Women’s Champions League.

Nigeria’s flagbearer, Edo Queens, defeated Ampem Darkoa Ladies of Ghana 4-1 in a penalty shootout after the encounter failed to produce a winner in 90 minutes. The game ended 2-2 in regular time.

But following Edo Queens’ penalty shootout win, the Ghana Football Association filed a protest saying that the match officials and organisers should have allowed the match to go for the stipulated 30 minutes of extra time before the penalty kicks.

CAF upheld Ghana’s protest on its merits as the direct resort to penalty kicks after regular time constituted a breach of Articles 13.1 and 72.4 of the CAF Women’s Champions League regulations.

Speaking on the confederation’s decision, Jalla said: “CAF is again caught in another administrative crisis less than a year after the last Nations Cup in Morocco, where it overturned Senegal’s victory over Morocco.

“The same scenario is playing out again in the just-concluded WAFU B tournament hosted by Burkina Faso. The rule clearly states there would be 15 mins half each way before penalty kicks but match officials and organisers proceeded to penalty kicks, which Edo Queens won by 4-1.”

He asked: “What are the 54-member federations that make up CAF learning in terms of organisation of championships? It has been one blunder to another while holding national teams and football clubs in Africa responsible for CAF failures?

“Who authorised match officials to proceed to penalty kicks? Are the match officials not conversant with the rules? CAF must allow football games to be won and lost on the field of play and invoke disciplinary measures against its staff and committee members and stop subjecting the continent to constant embarrassment.

“CAF needs to wake up and reorganise itself. Edo Queens have no reason to honour a replay and the NFF must make that clear to CAF,” Jalla stated.
